Hashtags have always been well known as being Twitters thing. Tweeters could use them to generate interest in their tweets, linking posts with various relevant (for the most part) key words. This would enable other Twitter users to search keywords and find all the tweets that had been tagged with this word. Hashtags have always been around, but they seem to have exploded recently and Facebook have taken notice.
